On Friday I unpacked a box that was
left from when I moved here. I mean, the box had been opened and the
top layers of it was an ever shifting bit of papers from school, things
to be filed, and partially done craft projects. The bottom layers were
a mystery I've only caught sight of periodically when something from
the top fell lower into the box, or when I wanted some kind of grab-bag-ish
treat.
So I went in and sorted it all out
and treats were the least of it. Found my passport (which'll come in
handy when Tess, Jen
and I head off to London in next year). Found my regular camera and
three rolls of film that I must have taken back in Berkeley. Found an
entire set of fieldnotes from that project I worked at the Bancroft
Library. But best of all put away the items I wanted, tossed the rest,
and finally got that box out of my living room.
The Living Room is still a bit of a
work in progress. The lack of bookshelves is actually pretty funny by
now (poor Anna keeps knocking books over as
she rubs up against them -- it's like Jim's bookstore on The Hill in
here in places). Need a coffee table. And my tiny TV... well it makes
watching anything with subtitles trying. But getting the box out is
a good first step.
